When you think of RPG you likely think of an RPG-Adventure game. Such as the games you pointed out. This is the reason that there are so many sub-genres that are under the RPG heading.
ps. I don't know why I didn't just edit my last post.

True, but does anyone here actually live in a pokemon world? I'm going to say no. And since that would make none of us pokemon trainers we are assuming the role of that other person who lives as a trainer in a pokemon world. The only real connection to ourselves that the trainer has is if you name them your real name. It's still an RPG because we are assuming the role of that person's life.

isn't a genre the best fitting category for something? While we may take the role of someone in any game, since very few games are virtual reality, they may be better suited to go under a different title. Halo is a shooter because your primary goal is to shoot things. Mario kart is a racing game because while you assume the role of a nintendo character, the point of the game is to race. so yes, almost anything can be an rpg, but other genres fit better.

Exactly. When someone talks about an RPG, more often than not they're talking about a game where you have characters that level up after gaining exp. In other words, not Metroid.

I never said you didn't mean that. As the first sentence of the post said. I was just being picky. I know what you mean when you say RPG. A "traditional" RPG has character(s) gaining experience, leveling, equipment, stats, etc.
Metroid does have some RPG links however, you go through the game and get more equipment, power ups, etc. Although I would agree I wouldn't label it as an RPG.

I know, I just had to get my point across. I'm stubborn like that. And anyway, this is helping my post count.

that makes sense. to be an rpg, you must play the role of someone, meaning you seek to advance them personally, not advance a character through levels in a game for the sake of progress. while this may be a bi-product, a rpg has to see the growth of a character as he/she progresses through a story.

I love how we made a topic about the best games of all time into one about the definition of an RPG. We seem to be pretty good at it.

Probably, we could make a thread about what makes genres unique, if anyone has questions about them.
