I found one more rule that just screwed me over with a chain of 29: if you are recharging the pokeradar don't let the screen shift from the location of the grassy patch that has already shaken. Maybe everyone knew this, but I didn't realize it. If the grassy patch disappears from view, you lose your chain

Breaking chains is no fun. You've gotta be really careful after you hit 40 and make sure not to step into any shaking patchs unless they sparkle.

Idk if this is correct, but after I reached 40 I (accidentally ) entered a patch with a different shake type. It was the same pokemon that I was chaining, so my chain remained intact, but I couldn't get a shiny. I ran the pokeradar another 20 times, nothing, then chained up to 73 before I got tired and careless. No shiny. I'm thinking that if you change grassy patch shake type, it basically resets you. Anyone know?

As long as your bottom screen says you still have a chain, it's not reset. Probably just bad luck like my first time. Also, your odds don't get any better after 40, so there's no need to enter any patchs that aren't shiny.
